Frogs Close Read {freebie included}

Happy almost Friday! We are wrapping up our nonfiction read on frogs this week and oh my did we have a blast!  When I say we I mean me too!  Every close read I feel like I learn even more then the kiddos!  There is nothing more exciting to see my kiddos SO excited about something!

We used the storia ebook below from Scholastic!  You can order it for a whiteboard or a paperback!  This edition comes with the interactive pieces so it was extra fun!

We also read additional frog books!

Our close read followed the same format as all of my lessons:
Day One:  Cold Read- read for enjoyment!  Students are listening to the story and I encourage them to find new FACTS they hear in the story.  I remind them that they will “teach” their partners after the story.  This is just like turn and talk or pair/share!  The “Teach”  “Okay” comes from the Whole Brain Teaching model!
Day Two: Vocabulary- students listen for unknown words and I chart the most important!  You can see below that I chose to use photos to help explain each vocabulary word.  We really drew attention to the use of photographs in the book and how it affected their learning so I chose to use them in other places as well! ๐Ÿ™‚

Day Three: Text-dependent Questions.  Students answered the text dependent questions using evidence from within their story! All the questions are in my packet!  We also constructed this can, have, are poster!

Day Four: Collaborative Learning- students worked with small groups to discuss and determine the steps of the frog life cycle!  They did really well this and now “froglet” is part of their daily vocabulary!

Day Five: Cumulative Writing- students will write why the frog must live by water!  They will support their answer with evidence from within the text!
We also worked on these informational frog booklets!  This is a freebie found below! ๐Ÿ™‚
