FREEBIE #4: Sound Manipulation Fluency Sheets for CVC Words

Sound manipulation plays a vital role in the Science of Reading as it underpins phonemic awareness—a critical skill in early literacy. This ability involves identifying, adjusting, and working with individual sounds within CVC words, which strengthens students’ reading and spelling skills. Mastery of sound manipulation supports understanding of the alphabetic principle, where each letter corresponds to a specific sound, setting the stage for successful decoding and spelling of words. Ultimately, sound manipulation is a core component of the structured and explicit methodology of the Science of Reading, fostering a solid grasp of the connections between sounds and letters.

These sheets can be used in small-group, as an independent center, or as in-class practice sheet.

You can also print the fluency sheets 2 to 1 page in your free Adobe Reader. This allows you to save on resources. The picture above on the yellow tray is printed 2:1.

FREEBIE #5: CVC Words Flashcards

This is a quick but to the point free download. Access a set of CVC words-based flashcards with sound icons. The sound icons are nonfiction pictures which are highly engaging for learners.

You can use these cards to review CVC words effectively. They’re also great for sorting activities that focus on vowel and consonant sounds. For instance, display a card with the short vowel “/a/.” Students will then sort pictures that match the CVC short vowel, like bag, hat, cat, and ram. If a picture doesn’t match the short vowel sound, students will place it in a separate category. This activity reinforces sound recognition and helps solidify their understanding of CVC word structures.
