Differentiated Nonfiction Readers (Rabbit Reader Freebie Included)

Nonfiction readers

Hi there and thanks so much for stopping by! Today’s post is all about NONFICTION reading along with a freebie! I have to admit nonfiction wasn’t always my favorite thing to teach…mainly because it was nearly IMPOSSIBLE to track down material that was at my students’ level and nonfiction based. Then, when it came to nonfiction readers at the lower levels? Forget about that! It was then I realized that there was a need for leveled NONFICTION readers and readers at varying levels! If you have any of my guided reading mega bundles then you know I’m all about differentiating my readers! There is just something about handing out the “same” book to each of your guided reading groups but then have those books at THEIR level.

I set out to create a line of strictly nonfiction guided reading books! I chose to do two bundles to meet the needs of kiddos in grades K-1! I have a set of leveled A-D readers and a set of E-H readers. Some teachers have decided to get both bundles so that they have the maximum differentiation for their kiddos.

Levels A-D

Levels E-H

With each of the levels the books will aesthetically look the same! The covers of the books will be identical. The only small difference will be the leveling code! Inside the books you’ll find vibrant REAL LIFE photographs, captions, labels, speech bubbles and in the higher levels you’ll find underlined vocabulary words.

One of the best things about the books is that ALL of the levels have these amazing text features. Even at the earliest of levels the kiddos can still learn and apply these text features! This was something I really wanted to make sure I included. I am also super passionate about having the real life photos in my nonfiction easy readers! The kids see a lot of “cartoon” characters and clip art. I wanted to be able to give them an opportunity to really be exposed to such topics and see several images up and close. Another added bonus is for the level A books, students have included tracking dots! These offer those youngest readers a support for using one to one tracking.

When creating the books I decided to make three sets! I have an animals topics set, science topics set and social studies topics set. Each of the sets include 15 topics and again there are  those 4 levels per topic so that makes each set with 60 books. Below are the included topics for each set! Again, each set is offered in levels A-D or levels E-H. If you aren’t familiar with the lettering level system I am using, you can utilize this free chart to compare leveling systems!

Along with nonfiction text features, there is another hidden gem for each reader! On the back of each reader is an included comprehension check! The comprehension check is also differentiated! You can see below the varying comprehension checks! With levels A-D the students will match, check for accuracy and/or write a written response.

Levels E-H

For levels E-H the students will check for accuracy and/or write a written response. These are wonderful to have built-in to each reader! It allows for less paper and/or the students can take the book to read independently and can do a comprehension check for you to verify their reading and understanding of the text.

I have also included a couple built-in freebies to the packets! Each packet has translated SPANISH books!

Another built-in bonus is that each level also contains English PAPERLESS interactive books! These books will work on any device that has PowerPoint like an interactive whiteboard, Smartboard, I-pad, etc.

Below I will leave links to the individual topics for levels A-D and levels E-H. The bundle contains 180 readers! The bundle also includes the two free bonuses (Spanish readers and Interactive PAPERLESS readers).  You can view the bundles by clicking below or on the images!

    1. You can print them in grayscale on your printer! Because they are real life pictures they don’t come in black and white like clip art, thanks!

  1. Hi. I can not find the differentiated nonfiction readers on your teacher pay teachers page. I click the picture above which leads me to your page, but not the readers.
