Unit 1 - ABCs

Unit 1 - ABCs

Create a class alphabet book your students will love reading again and again! Each student completes a letter page by drawing pictures that begin with the focus sound, then the teacher assembles the pages into a collaborative alphabet book for the classroom library.

Turn alphabet learning into a class keepsake with this free Class Alphabet Book! Students work together to create their very own alphabet book, giving them meaningful practice with letters and sounds while creating something they will be excited to find in the classroom library.

Assign each student a letter page or have multiple students contribute to the same letter. For example, on the Aa page, a student can draw an apple or fill the page with several pictures that begin with /a/. Students can also decorate the large capital and lowercase letters on their page, adding even more ownership to their contribution.

Once the pages are complete, the teacher assembles them into one collaborative class alphabet book. Add the finished book to your classroom library and students can revisit their own work and their classmates' pages throughout the year. There is something extra exciting about reading a book that YOU helped create!

This activity gives alphabet and beginning sound practice a meaningful purpose. Students are thinking about the focus phoneme, generating words that begin with that sound, connecting the sound to its letter, and representing their ideas through illustrations.
