Free CVCC and R-controlled mapping mats with color-coded boxes. Students tap, map, and write words daily to build decoding and spelling skills.
These CVCC and R-controlled everyday mapping mats are designed for repeated use, giving students structured practice with decoding and spelling. The mats follow the familiar sound mapping process with color-coded supports:
Green = beginning sound (onset)
Yellow = vowel sound (medial)
Red = consonant sounds (ending or r-controlled)
For CVCC words, each consonant in the final blend gets its own red box. Example: nest → /n/ (green), /e/ (yellow), /s/ (red), /t/ (red).
For R-controlled words, the r-controlled vowel unit is treated as one sound. Example: jar → /j/ (green), /ar/ (red). Another example: bark → /b/ (green), /ar/ (yellow), /k/ (red).
These mats can be slipped into sheet protectors for daily use with manipulatives or dry-erase markers. Perfect for phonics warm-ups, intervention practice, or literacy centers.
