Free CVCC and R-controlled mats with picture cards. Students say the word, tap sounds, map with manipulatives, and write the word.
These CVCC and R-controlled mats follow the familiar Say It, Tap It, Map It, Write It routine but extend practice beyond simple CVC words. Students use the picture cards to work through each word step by step.
Say the word aloud (examples: nest, gift, cart, bird)
Tap each sound as they segment the word
Map the sounds with manipulatives in the color-coded boxes
CVCC reminder: beginning = green, vowel = yellow, ending blend = red, red (each consonant gets its own red manipulative)
Write the full word in the final box to connect phonemes to graphemes
This routine provides repeated decoding and encoding practice, helping students solidify blending skills with CVCC clusters and tricky R-controlled vowels. Perfect for small groups, centers, or one-on-one intervention
