Free digraphs and CCVC clip the sound cards. Students listen for the target sound and clip the green, yellow, or red box to show its position.
These Digraphs and CCVC Clip the Sound Cards help students identify where a sound occurs within a word. Each card shows a picture and a target sound. Students say the word, listen carefully, and then clip the correct colored box to show if the sound is at the beginning, middle, or end. This activity blends phonemic awareness with phonics decoding and is fully aligned with the science of reading.
Example: shell → sound /e/ is in the middle → clip the yellow box
Green box = beginning sound (example: /sh/ in ship)
Yellow box = medial vowel sound (example: /e/ in shell)
Red box = final sound (example: /p/ in clap)
Encourages active listening and precise phoneme placement
Great for small-groups, intervention, centers, or at-home practice
Works well with clothespins or colored clips for a hands-on routine
These cards give students a clear, interactive way to connect phonemic awareness with word-level phonics decoding.
