Digraphs and CCVC Puzzlers – Free Self-Checking Phonics Word Building Puzzles

Guided Phonics + Beyond

Unit 3 - Digraphs

Free digraphs and CCVC puzzlers. Students connect puzzle pieces to build and read words, then check with the completed top piece.

These Digraphs and CCVC Puzzlers give students a playful way to practice phonics while making learning self-checking. Each puzzle is broken into sound parts on the bottom pieces and the complete word on the top piece. Students connect the parts to spell and read the word, then check their work with the top piece.

  • Example word: sh–in → shin

  • Other examples: ch–op → chopsl–ed → sleddr–um → drum

  • Although a word like frog has four sounds, these puzzlers focus only on the first chunk or sound unit, which is why some cards are not broken down into every phoneme—simply omit those as needed.

  • Students decode as they connect pieces, reinforcing phoneme-grapheme mapping

  • Self-checking design builds independence and confidence

  • Perfect for science of reading-aligned small-group practice, centers, or intervention

  • Encourages both decoding and spelling in a tactile, engaging format

These puzzles turn phonics drills into hands-on play, while still ensuring students focus on accurate decoding of digraphs and CCVC words.
