Build decoding and encoding skills with these 9 free phonics blending mats! Students tap sounds, map phonemes, connect sounds to graphemes, and write words using a consistent four-step routine.
Make decoding and encoding practice simple with these FREE Phonics Blending Mats! This set includes 9 printable mats designed to help students connect sounds to letters through a consistent four-step routine.
Students begin by tapping the individual sounds in a word using the color-coded dots. Next, they map the phonemes, identify the corresponding graphemes, and write the complete word. Each mat includes blending arrows, mapping boxes, and handwriting lines to support this process.
The mats progress from two-sound blending into CVC words, blends, and CVCe patterns. They also coordinate with the color-coded units in Guided Phonics + Beyond, making them easy to incorporate into your existing phonics instruction.
Simply print and laminate or place the mats in dry-erase sleeves for repeated practice with your own word lists!
How to Use the Blending Mats:
Tap It: Say the word aloud. Students tap each colored dot as they identify the individual sounds, then blend the sounds together.
Map It: Students segment the word and use counters or manipulatives to represent each sound in the phoneme boxes.
Graph It: Students identify the letters that represent each sound and place letter tiles or write the graphemes in the boxes.
Write It: Students write the complete word on the handwriting lines, connecting the sounds and letters through encoding practice.
