Build stronger blending skills with these free Tap and Blend Through Drills! Students begin by connecting two sounds before progressing to CVC words using sound dots and blending arrows.
Blending is one of the most important foundational skills in beginning reading, but it can also be one of the trickiest for students to master! These FREE Tap and Blend Through Drills provide a structured way to help students connect individual sounds and blend them smoothly.
The resource begins with two-sound blending drills before progressing to three-sound CVC words. This intentional progression allows students to practice moving smoothly from one sound to the next without adding pauses or extra sounds.
Each drill features individual letters, sound dots, and a directional arrow. Students tap the dots to identify the individual sounds and then follow the arrow to blend the sounds together. The CVC drills build on this routine by introducing a third sound, helping students transfer their blending skills to actual word reading.
The printables include color-coded sound dots as well as black-and-white versions. Students can practice with short vowel patterns and then move into mixed CVC word lists for additional decoding and fluency practice.
An Important Note About the Two-Sound Blending Drills
You may notice that some letter combinations in the beginning drills resemble open syllables. However, these pages are not designed to teach syllable types or introduce words. Students are simply practicing connecting two individual sounds through successive blending.
The goal is blending sounds, not reading syllables! These drills serve as a temporary instructional scaffold to help students develop the blending skills needed for successful CVC word reading. Once students can smoothly connect two sounds, they can progress to the included CVC blending drills.
