Teach VC blending with this free 5-day lesson plan designed to move beginning readers from hearing individual sounds to blending, reading, building, and writing VC words. Includes daily instruction plus ready-to-use word cards, letter cards, and a Tap It, Map It, Build It, Write It mat.
Not quite ready for CVC words? Start with VC blending! This free 5-day VC Blending Lesson Plan gives beginning readers a manageable first step into blending by working with just two sounds at a time.
The week progresses through VC words including ax, at, if, it, in, up, us, on, ox, am, and an. Each day follows a consistent before-reading, during-reading, and post-reading routine so students can hear the sounds, say them, blend them, read the word, and then apply what they learned through decoding and encoding practice.

The lessons intentionally build beyond simply reading the words. Students add and swap sounds, build VC words, and encode and write them. Day 5 also introduces nasal /a/ with am and an, including a simple articulation cue to help students notice how the sound is produced.
You'll also get the hands-on materials needed to extend the VC blending lessons. The free download includes VC word cards, individual letter cards, and a Tap It, Map It, Build It, Write It mat that takes students from phonemic awareness into phoneme-grapheme mapping and encoding.
