Students begin with individual phonemes, practice repeating and connecting those sounds, and then move into continuous blending to read complete VC words. The books include the VC words at, ax, in, it, if, up, us, on, and ox, providing focused practice with short vowels and beginning consonant sounds.
Visual mouth formation photographs, sound pictures, blending dots, and directional arrows give beginning readers multiple supports as they learn how sounds connect. Rather than simply asking students to "sound it out," the routine explicitly models the progression from isolated sounds to a successfully blended word.
Each VC blending book also includes a review component that brings the learning together with letter recognition, sound-picture connections, and practice reading the complete VC word.
