This high frequency words sound-by-sound cards freebie is a targeted phonics freebie and free download designed to support explicit instruction using a Science of Reading aligned approach.
Each high frequency word is broken into sound boxes so students can map each phoneme. For example, the word said is shown as |s|ai|d|, helping students connect sounds to letters in a clear, structured way. When a sound does not follow typical phonics patterns, it is marked with a heart to indicate a heart sound. In said, the ai is marked to show the /e/ sound.
These instructional cards support both decoding and encoding by helping students tap, map, and understand each part of the word. This makes high frequency words more accessible and less reliant on memorization alone.
