Make October phonics practice feel like a mystery with this free word-building center! Students use picture sound clues to uncover, build, and record mystery words.
Turn phonics practice into a mystery with this FREE October Mystery Words center! Students use the picture clues on each fall-themed card to identify the sounds, determine the matching graphemes, and build the mystery word.
Students follow a simple Think, Listen, Build routine. They look at each picture clue, listen for the represented sound, and use the sounds in sequence to uncover the mystery word. For example, the pictures may represent /k/ /a/ /t/, which students use to build and read cat.
The freebie includes two differentiated sets, making it easy to match the activity to your students. One set focuses on basic letter-sound correspondences, while the more advanced set introduces digraphs including th, sh, ch, and wh. Students can build the words directly on the task cards and then extend their practice with the included recording sheets.
The colorful fall trees give this phonics center an October feel without making it Halloween-specific, so you can use it throughout the fall season.
