This free Pumpkin Knowledge In-a-Click set provides five days of systematic read aloud instruction centered around Pumpkin Circle by George Levenson. Students build knowledge about the pumpkin life cycle while strengthening listening comprehension and developing meaningful vocabulary.

Teachers will need a copy of Pumpkin Circle or can access the book online. The included digital teaching slides are available in Google Slides and guide you through the entire week, making it easy to open the lesson and teach.

Across the five days, students listen to the text multiple times with a different purpose for learning. They activate and build background knowledge, explicitly learn vocabulary, answer text-dependent questions, explore cause and effect and sequencing, make connections, retell their learning, and complete a final assessment. The lessons continually encourage students to collect new “bits of knowledge” and connect new learning to information already stored in their knowledge case.

Vocabulary instruction focuses on four words from Pumpkin Circle: damp, mush, tendrils, and harvest. Students learn kid-friendly meanings, connect each word to photographs from the topic, and use whole-body movements to help make the new vocabulary memorable.

Daily printable activities extend the learning from the digital lessons. Students illustrate new knowledge, work with vocabulary examples and non-examples, sequence the pumpkin life cycle, explore cause and effect, and demonstrate what they have learned. Printed vocabulary cards and an assessment answer key are also included.
