CVCe Rime Builder Mats – Free Silent E Word Family Builders for Phonics and Fluency

Guided Phonics + Beyond

Unit 4 - CVCE

Free CVCe rime builder mats. Students add consonants to rimes like _ike to build, read, and practice silent e words.

These CVCe rime builder mats help students explore word families and strengthen decoding fluency. Each mat highlights a rime ending (such as –ike), and students use consonant cards to build as many CVCe words as possible. This practice encourages pattern recognition, blending, and fluency while keeping students engaged in a hands-on, science of reading-aligned routine.

  • Example: With the rime –ike, students build words like bike, like, pike, Mike, hike

  • Reinforces orthographic mapping through repeated practice with the same pattern

  • Students blend, read, and write each new word

  • Great for small-groups, literacy centers, or partner activities

  • Flexible for both decoding practice and fluency building

These mats show students how many words can be created from a single rime, making phonics practice efficient and powerful.
