Each set is made up of three coordinating parts. Students begin with the complete reference card featuring the picture and its matching letter or word. They then find the individual picture card and matching letter or word card to recreate the complete set. Because students can compare their pieces directly to the reference card, the activity offers a built-in self-correcting component that makes it especially helpful for independent practice.
The cards cover a huge range of phonics skills, beginning with lowercase alphabet letters and continuing through CVC words, digraphs, blends, CVCE words, CVCC words, r-controlled vowels, and vowel variants. The different phonics sections are also color-coded, making it easier to organize and pull the skill your students are currently practicing.
The 3-part design is also perfect for use with divided learning trays. Students can place the complete card in one section and match the picture and letter or word pieces in the remaining sections for a neat, contained center setup. However, a tray is absolutely NOT necessary! Simply spread the cards on a table, desk, or floor and students can complete the exact same matching activity as a tabletop phonics center.
